The Multicultural Scholastic Award Program (MSA) is a scholarship and student retention initiative targeting academically talented students from diverse backgrounds. All students are encouraged to apply. The MSA Program offers scholarships for incoming freshmen, current UNT students, incoming transfer students, masters and doctoral students. Scholarships range from $1,000 per year for undergraduate students to $1500 per year for graduate students (see below for details). UNT's Outreach and Community Involvement has administered this program since 1996 and supports over 130 students annually. The MSA Program supports the Texas Closing the Gaps by 2015 initiative to graduate 630,000 additional college students. The MSA Program is a Top 10 Recruitment and Retention Program in Texas and aims at providing support with financial assistance, mentoring, cultural enrichment, personal and leadership development.

Letters of recommendation must be filled out by a teacher, professor, employer, school or academic counselor or college or university staff (in a leadership or supervisory position).

Write a brief autobiography describing your motivation for pursuing a college degree and discuss personal and academic achievements.
Discuss your community service involvement as a high school student and address the impact you made through your efforts.
UNT offers its students a very diverse learning environment. Discuss your involvement as a high school student in racially/ethnically diverse environments and discuss the opportunities that you believe UNT’s diversity will provide to you.
Describe how receiving a $1000 scholarship for four consecutive years will impact your educational goals.

UNT Undergraduate Continuing

Write a brief autobiography describing your motivation for completing your bachelor’s degree at UNT and discuss personal and academic achievements while at UNT.
Discuss your community service/engagement participation as an undergraduate at UNT and discuss the significance of your involvement.
UNT offers its students a very diverse learning environment. Discuss your UNT involvement with promoting diversity and discuss its impact on developing your current worldview.
Describe how receiving a $1000 scholarship will impact your educational goals.
Add other relevant information that will help the selection committee know you better.

Transfer

Write a brief autobiography describing your motivation for earning a bachelor’s degree at UNT and discuss personal and academic achievements.
Discuss your community service involvement as a high school senior or college student and address the impact you made by your efforts.
UNT offers its students a very diverse learning environment. Discuss your involvement in racially/ethnically diverse environments after high school and discuss the opportunities that you believe UNT’s diversity will provide to you.

Freshman - Provide high school transcripts showing Rank, Class Size, and SAT/ACT scores.
Transfer - Provide transcripts showing cumulative GPA for all college work.

Award Value and Eligibility Requirements

Freshman

$4,000 ($ 500 a semester for up to four years)

Must have a score of at least 1000 on SAT(Critical Reading + Math) or 21 on the ACT. Preferably in the top 25th percentile of graduating class
Must apply & be accepted to UNT
Must have filed FAFSA or TASFA by March 31st
If transferring with 29 or fewer college credit hours prior to Spring 2012, must meet entering freshmen requirements and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in college work

Transfer

$2,000 ($500 a semester for up to two years)

Must have completed 30 college credit hours or more with a minimum GPA of 3.0, prior to Spring 2012.
Must have completed the application for admissions to UNT.
If transferring with 29 or fewer college credit hours prior to Spring 2012, must meet entering freshmen requirements and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in college work

UNT Undergraduate Continuing

$1,000 ($500 for two semesters)

Must be currently enrolled at UNT.
Must have completed 30 UNT credit hours.
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, prior to Spring 2012.

Graduate

$3,000 ($750 a semester for up to 2 years)

Must be a Master's or Doctorate level student.
Must have been accepted to UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.
Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5

Requirements for maintaining scholarships

If awarded the MSA Scholarship, all recipients must be enrolled full-time during each fall and spring semesters (12 hours Undergraduate and 9 hours Gradaute).
Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for Undergraduate students and a GPA of 3.5 for Gradaute students.
Complete 25 hours per semester of community service hours.
Keep UNT Outreach and Community Involvement informed of any change of status or academic standing and/or academic needs and concerns.
Actively participate in the programs designated by the UNT Outreach and Community Involvement to receive continuous academic guidance.
Attend workshops and other events designed to help students succeed at UNT.
If unable to meet requirements set forth by the MSA program, recipients will be allowed an opportunity to make an appeal. The MSA Coordinator and Director of OCI will review the appeal and make a decision based on the nature and reason for the appeal.
